Prices Are Relative in Forex Trading

Let’s pick up where we left off in the last article on the basic happenings of the foreign exchange market. We mentioned that people buy and sell currencies for one another, but we need to establish how these prices are set.

In forex, prices for currencies are relative to one another.

How forex prices work

It’s hard to imagine giving a price for a currency in another currency. That just doesn’t make sense; it’s much easier to understand currency value as what we can exchange it for.

We can easily know that 1.25 US Dollars is enough to buy a soda–a Coca-Cola. However, how can traders know that $1.25 is equal to 1 Euro, .80 Pounds, or 10 Mexican Pesos?

It’s the economy!

In many ways, the value of each currency is tied to the performance of the economy it represents.

When the American economy is performing well, the dollar is likely to rise in value against other currencies. Thus, holding dollars is very much like investing in every person, company, and government in America, since the value of the dollar is dependent on everyone’s success.

Isn’t it great we all benefit from the success of everyone else? A strong economy almost always leads to a stronger national currency.

Taking that point to its logical conclusion, it would make sense that when the US economy is strong, so too is the dollar. Thus, the dollar’s value rises against other, weaker economies. A new perspective: if the US economy is growing and Mexico was experiencing a recession, the US dollar would likely be a stronger investment than the Mexican Peso. The market would reflect this, and it would take more Pesos to buy a dollar.

Investors who notice this trend can profit by speculating on the changes in currency values. If the dollar is soon to rise against the Peso, a trader could exchange Pesos for dollars through a currency broker. This trader would make a profit after the exchange rates change in his or her favor.

For example: Assume that we borrow 10 Mexican Pesos and trade them for 1 US Dollar.

If the currency rates change so that now it takes 11 Pesos to buy 1 US Dollar, we can exchange our US Dollar for 11 pesos, pay back the 10 pesos we borrowed, and enjoy a 1 peso profit. That one peso profit, at the current exchange rate of 11:1, is worth $.09. We made a 9% return on our dollars!

This is the very simple core of the foreign exchange market. When traders speak of buying and selling currencies, they’re really just talking about swapping one currency for another to make a profit. Of course, the full story is slightly more complicated, but keep reading and we’ll share all the nitty-gritty details.

What is Forex?

To put it in very simple terms, the foreign exchange market is a currency market, where investment banks, institutions, commercial companies, and individual investors go to buy, sell, and ultimately swap one currency for one another.

Different currencies are used in different places around the world. In the United States, we use the US dollar, which is our currency. In Australia, the official currency is the Australian Dollar. In Great Britain, they use the Pound. Europe uses the Euro.

All of these currencies have a different value, which is dependent on other currencies.
So what is forex?

Forex is the foreign exchange market. The foreign exchange market is a virtual market where investors buy and sell currencies for other currencies.

If you’ve traveled out of your home country before, you’ve interacted with the foreign exchange market and you didn’t even know it.

If you were to travel from the United States to Canada, you would trade your US Dollars for Canadian dollars at a bank, airport teller, or any currency exchange service. In trading your US dollars for Canadian Dollars, you participated on the global forex market.

But we’re just small fry in this massive global market.

You see, we’re just individuals. We don’t have tons and tons of money like banks, institutional investors, hedge fund managers, or mega-corporations. In comparison to these oversized professionals, we’re merely a drop in the bucket.

Mega-corporations rely on the foreign exchange market to trade in their currencies that they earn all around the world. Walmart, one of the largest retail companies in the world, has stores in 44 countries around the globe, even though it is based in the United States.

When it earns money in France, the company isn’t paid in dollars. Walmart gets paid in Euros. The company has to trade its Euros in for dollars to account for profits and losses.

Naturally, Walmart participates in the foreign exchange market to convert its foreign currencies into its home currency.

You Don’t Have to Be Big to Trade Forex

But you don’t have to be a Fortune 500 company to trade on the foreign exchange market. In fact, many traders make money in foreign exchange in buying and selling currencies for a profit. We’ll get to this in the following tutorials, but the point needs to be made that:

U.S. futures sharply lower as Fed rally short-lived; Dow drops 1.5%

Forexpros – U.S. stock futures pointed to a broadly lower open on Wednesday, after rallying sharply the previous day on the Federal Reserve's pledge to keep rates at ultra-low levels “at least” through mid-2013.

Ahead of the open, the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures pointed to a loss of 1.5%, the S&P 500 futures fell 1.3%, while the Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 1.9%.

The Federal Reserve pledged on Tuesday to keep its benchmark interest rate at an all-time low, adding that it will maintain a loose monetary policy until “at least through mid-2013.”

In a statement, the Fed said growth was much slower than expected and the labor market had deteriorated, underlining concerns over the U.S. economic outlook.

The Fed also indicated that it “discussed the range of policy tools available to promote a strong economic outlook recovery in a context of price stability” and said it was prepared to employ the tools “as appropriate”.

Meanwhile, shares in Walt Disney tumbled 4.3% after the company reported restructuring and impairment charges totaling USD34 million in the third quarter.

On the upside, department store operator Macy’s saw shares climb 3% after reporting a 64% increase in second quarter profit. The upbeat results prompted the company to raise its full-year earnings forecast.

Clothing retailer Polo Ralph Lauren saw shares surge 10.2% after it said fiscal first quarter net income rose 52% to USD184.1 million. Revenue in the quarter rose 28% to USD1.49 billion, above expectations for revenue of USD1.43 billion.

Other notable earnings scheduled for Wednesday include, technology firm Cisco Systems and media giant News Corp., which were both slated to report results after the closing bell.

Meanwhile, shares in Bank of America could be active, as chief executive Brian Moynihan was scheduled to face an investor conference call later in the day with Fairholme Capital, which owns around 92 million shares in the bank.

Across the Atlantic, European stock markets posted sharp losses, as mounting fears over sovereign debt contagion weighed. The EURO STOXX 50 tumbled 1.7%, France’s CAC 40 fell 1.5%, Germany's DAX shed 0.5%, while Britain's FTSE 100 edged 0.25% lower.

During the Asian trading session, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index jumped 2.1%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index rose 0.9%.

A report from China’s National Bureau of Statistics showed that China’s trade surplus widened to USD31.5 billion in July, the highest level in more than two years. Analysts had expected China’s trade surplus to widen to USD27.4 billion.

Later in the day, the U.S. was to produce data on the federal budget balance as well as reports on crude oil stockpiles and wholesale inventories.

Forex - EUR/USD down on economic data

Forexpros - The Euro was lower against the U.S. Dollar on Wednesday after the release of U.S. data on Federal Budget Balance.

EUR/USD was trading at 1.4226, down 1.04% at time of writing.

The pair was likely to find support at 1.4070, Friday’s low, and resistance at 1.4426, Monday’s high.

Earlier in the day, official data showed that The U.S. federal budget balance fell less-than-expected to a seasonally adjusted -129.4B last month from -43.1B in the preceding month.

Analysts had expected U.S. federal budget balance to fall to -140.0B last month.

Meanwhile, the Euro was down against the British Pound and the Japanese Yen, with EUR/GBP shedding 0.14% to hit 0.8798 and EUR/JPY falling 1.26% to hit 109.24.

Forex: Commodity currencies erased daily losses

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – High-yield currencies moved considerably during the American session, as initially reached fresh highs against the Dollar but then turned lower, to new monthly lows to then bounced sharply back to the upside erasing losses. The Kiwi is outperforming the Loonie and the Aussie on Friday.

Commodity currencies are moving in line with Wall Street main stock indexes. The Dow Jones bottomed earlier at 11,140, the lowest level since early December but then jumped more than 300 points and currently is rising 97 points or 0.86%.

AUD/USD bottomed at 1.0375, fresh 4-month lows but then rebounded sharply to test daily highs at 1.0525. Currently it is struggling to close the week above 1.0500.

NZD/USD reached the lowest level on Asian hours at 0.8275 but currently is testing levels on top of 0.8420.

USD/CAD is trading at 0.9780/85, just a few pips below the price it had at the beginning of the day after peaking at 0.9852, the strongest level since June 29.

Market sentiment improved after reports suggested that the ECB was willing to buy Italian bond and following a press conference where Italian Premier, Silvio Berlusconi, announced a G-7 meeting of Finance ministers and also said that the budget will be balanced by 2013.

S&P downgrades US credit rating to AA-plus

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - The United States lost its AAA debt rating, on late Friday, from Standard & Poor’s for the first time in history. The credit-rating agency said the political system of the world’s top economy has become less stable and is still concerned about the government's budget deficit and rising debt burden.

"The downgrade reflects our opinion that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration recently agreed to falls short of what, in our view, would be necessary to stabilize the government's medium-term debt dynamics," S&P said in a statement.

The outlook on the new U.S. credit rating is "negative," S&P added, which means another downgrade is possible in the next 12 to 18 months.

US government says S&P is wrong

The White House reacted with indignation to Standard & Poor's credit rating downgrade from AAA to AA-plus. A government spokeswoman said to media that S&P was wrong in its calculation, the debt value was overestimated by 2 billion, she stated.

Tug of War: Growth vs. Inflation

FXstreet.com's analyst Valeria Bednarik says in the article below that the UK "monetary independence is both a blessing and a curse", good point given the problems over the Eurozone periphery. It seems to be accepted by the market that the BoE is focused on inflation and not the recovery, as the BoE´s governor Mervyn King and Chancellor George Osborne have been busy these last six months.

Looking at the numbers, year-over-year inflation was up around 4.2% in June, leading to speculation of a rate hike which could threaten the economic recovery, as growth remains stagnant with the quarterly GDP at mere 0.5% in Q1.

Tug of War: Growth vs. Inflation

With the crisis the world is living through right now, if there is something to say about the UK it is that their monetary independence is both a blessing and a curse. Back in 2008 when the financial world collapsed following the US housing mortgage crisis, that economic independence had let the UK act in proper manner, and the BOE quickly reacted by cutting rates, creating the assets purchase facility program, and in general favoring a re-balancing of the economy. Problem is, things haven´t gone according to the plan, despite the huge devaluation the UK is still struggling to recover.

And with growth still remaining mostly stagnant, the recovery path seems harder day after day with overwhelming negative fundamental data and rising inflation.

At one point, we may wonder whether the UK is actually advancing or at the verge of a another financial collapse. Especially if things remain unchanged and Chancellor George Osborne continues to insist that the government hold its nerve by not deviating from his plans to cut borrowing, despite the increasing evidence that this policy may be damaging growth.

Economic Growth Stagnant

The United Kingdom GDP expanded just 0.50% over the first quarter of 2011, compared to the previous quarter. From 1955 until 2010 the UK´s average quarterly GDP Growth was 0.59% reaching a historical high of 5.30% in March of 1973 and a record low of -2.50% in March of 1974.
While among the worlds' most developed economies, it´s growth has never been close to outstanding, as we see from the previous figures, yet the main reason of the latest disappointing results may be found in a stalling manufacturing sector, a contraction in construction, and a sharp drop in oil and gas extraction. If something is giving support to the Pound these days, it is the strong oil near $100 a barrel. The bottom line is that when it comes to economic growth, the risk remains to the downside in the UK.

When it comes to the labor sector, the unemployment rate was 7.7% back in May. That's barely above the 7.22% average from 1971 to 2010, so despite it being not a positive figure, at least the sector is among one of the better all things relative. The latest reading in June showed the unemployment rate was down 0.1% over the quarter and 0.1% on the year. Still the report showed there where 1.52 million people claiming unemployment allowances which was an increase of 24,500 from May. In particular, the number of men claiming allowances increased by 15,000 to reach 1.03 million and the number of women claimants increased by 9,500 to reach 493,900, the highest figure since August 1996.

The Minister for Employment Chris Grayling said this month: "There continue to be some encouraging signs in the labor market figures, particularly with the continued rise in private sector employment. It's really important that we continue to support the economy and encourage businesses to invest and create jobs. However, we do not underestimate the scale of the challenge that we face to help people into employment.”

Inflationary Pressure on the Rise

While the UK has cut down their interest rate benchmark to 0.50% where it has remained steady since March 2009, inflation keeps rising above the BOE´s tolerance limit and was last reported at 4.2% in June over the year. From 1989 until 2010, the average inflation rate in the United Kingdom was 2.72% reaching a historical high of 8.50% in April 1991 and a record low of 0.50% in May of 2000.

While back in May this year, the BOE's governor Mervyn King said that inflation was “uncomfortably high,” and officials signaled they may need to raise interest rates later this year even as the economy struggles to build momentum. Interestingly however, the fact is that just one month later the central bank turned back towards it´s prior dovish stance, with 7 out of 9 members voting to keep rates on hold. The flip from hawkish to dovish, has come after the committee lost its hawkish member, Andrew Sentance, in May this year.

And while the idea of keeping rates low to jump-start growth remains, inflationary pressure keeps rising. The thing is that the BOE would rather focus on containing inflation, rather than stimulating employment or growth. If inflation keeps rising towards 5.0% as Governor King expects, the BOE will may have no choice but to rise the benchmark in an attempt to control it. At the same time, economic growth will hardly gain traction without the help of the central bank, while the UK continues applying their assets purchase program, or QE, as they can't remove it but only extend it: the quantitative easing program is another inflation generator for the economy. Up to this point, the tug of war the bank is trapped in will not result in a positive outcome no matter which side wins.

The BOE will have no choice but to sacrifice growth to contain inflation. While a rate hike may be expected by the end of this year, and we usually understand rate hikes as positive for a currency, I won't be expecting too much strength for the Pound, not even after a rate hike. Unless some signs of recovery start improving the sentiment over the UK economy, the Pound is set to extend its losses over the second half of 2011.

Repeat: China Offl PMI Seen Resilient Despite Weak HSBC

BEIJING (MNI) - A sub-50 reading for a China flash purchasing managers index released Thursday doesn't mean the government's index due for release on August 1 will also suggest that Chinese industry is in contraction.

While it wasn't a vote of confidence for the health of the Chinese economy, analysts said the weakness seen in the HSBC flash PMI today probably won't be reflected in the PMI that is issued by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.

Risk currencies and equities sold off immediately after HSBC said its flash purchasing managers index for July fell to a 28-month low of 48.9 and points to a reading under 50 when the UK-based bank reports the final reading on August 1.

The official PMI, a collaboration between CFLP and the National Bureau of Statistics, dropped to 50.9 in June from 52.0. Its last sub-50 reading was in February 2009 and fell to as low as 38.8 in November 2008, at the height of the global financial crisis.

Markets would likely react negatively again on August 1 if CFLP announces the first reading below 50 in 28 months (the PMI is released at 0900 Beijing-time 0100 GMT.)

But analysts said that's unlikely to happen, arguing that the official PMI tends to survey larger state-owned firms, which are in better health than their smaller, often-privately held, peers captured by Markit, which compiles the PMI for HSBC.

"We don't believe that the official PMI would fall below 50 in July," said Ken Peng, a Beijing-based economist with BNP Paribas.

Even HSBC urged caution and dismissed concerns about a hard landing. Economist Qu Hongbin acknowledged that 70% of the HSBC survey panel comprises small and medium-sized firms and argued that the reading below 50 still points to industrial output growth of around 13%.

"Don't panic. Despite the slowing of manufacturing activity, resilient consumer spending and continued investment in thousands of infrastructure projects will continue to support GDP growth rate of almost 9% for the rest of this year," he told clients in a note.

At the same time that HSBC was releasing its survey, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spokesman Zhu Hongren was telling reporters that industrial output will grow by 13% to 15% in the second half of this year, compared with 14.3% in the first six months.

He acknowledged that small enterprises faced "outstanding difficulties" owing to financing problems, but denied there were waves of closures in southern China.

Today's data revived concerns about a hard economic landing in China, just a week after the government said the economy grew by a stronger-than-expected 9.5% y/y in the second quarter, powered by 15.1% jump in industrial output in June.

Both HSBC's Qu and BNP's Peng said the June data reflected easing electricity supply after the government allowed tariffs to rise. Peng said slightly easier credit conditions and better trade numbers also helped quarterly growth.

"Both the power and the trade boost should fade in coming months and that could tighten business environment further," he said, arguing that data support selective policy easing.

Despite the industry ministry's bullish outlook, pressure is mounting on the central government to further relax at least some of the slew of measures it has introduced since October to battle inflation.

Today's PMI reading may reflect seasonality -- Societe Generale's Wei Yao noted that the PMI last July also fell below 50 -- but it is also evidence of the pain being felt in more vulnerable parts of the economy as liquidity dries up and financing becomes increasingly hard to come by.

The credit availability index in the Market News International China Business Sentiment Survey fell to 33.33 in June, the third lowest on record (the China Business Sentiment Flash Survey is scheduled for release at 0935 Beijing time, 0135 GMT on July 22 and the final survey on July 29.)

Analysts said that Beijing could be forced to respond if the CFLP reports a lower-than-expected reading on August 1.

"No doubt, the growth momentum continues to soften. We expect the official PMI to come in at 50," said SG's Yao. "If official PMI comes in below 50, PBOC will probably be very cautious in tightening further."

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The EUR/USD suffered one of the worst 2-day loss in history. The pair traded at 1.4900 on Thursday and finished the week around 1.4350. The decline started with Trichet words singling that the ECB is not going to raise rate in the next meeting and on Friday, rumors about Greece leaving the Eurozone accelerated the decline.

The pair bottomed in the last day of the week at 1.4313, 620 pips below weekly highs reached on Wednesday at 1.4933 when it traded at the highest level in 17 months. The Euro was the worst performer during the week among majors.

In the Eurozone, Greece denied that it is considering leavening the euro. There were also speculations about a debt restructuration. “Pending the substantiation of this speculation, the euro will remain under pressure; but it will also hold off from a major run”, said Senior Currency Strategist from Daily FX, John Kicklighter.

A confirmation that Greece intends to leave, would send the euro sharply lower according to the Daily FX analyst. “Alternatively, putting to rest this speculation could lead to a temporary bounce that unwinds this morning’s losses. However, that doesn’t mean that it will recover any more ground than that; as traders now realize that the market is highly sensitive to concerns over the region’s financial stability”, Mr. Kicklighter added.

“The euro sell-off could continue on further position unwinding – especially if the correction in commodity prices runs further – and even lower levels in EUR/USD in the short term cannot be ruled”, analyst at the Danske Bank wrote in a report before the Greece news hit the wires. Forex: EUR/USD pulling back below 1.4500

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The EUR/USD peaked earlier at 1.4540/47, the highest price since January 14, 2010 but lost bullish momentum, moved in ranges for some hour and currently is testing levels below 1.4500. The pair is retreating after rising 200 pips from today’s opening price, extending to almost 400 pips the distance from Monday’s low.

The EUR/USD hit recently at 1.4987 the lowest price since early European session and remains hovering barely below the 1.4500 level.

Fan Yang, Chief Technical Strategist at FXTimes points out that the pair “is likely returning to its bullish mode”. “A swing projection seen in the daily chart is suggested by a positive reversal signal where the RSI low is lower, but the price low is higher”, Yang says. He affirms that the swing projection targets 1.4675, “this is the short-term target at the moment”.

US GOLD - Comex gold firmly above $1,500 on weaker dollar

New York 20/04/2011 - Comex gold was steady above $1,500 on Wednesday morning on a weaker dollar and governmental debt worries.

But prices have eased slightly from the morning's high following a flood of positive earnings reports and stronger equity markets.

Gold futures on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange for June delivery were recently trading up $9 at $1,504.10 per ounce in New York and earlier in the session reached an all-time record of $1,506.20.

"The impetus for the run-up early this morning was clearly the softer dollar, which is getting hammered and fell to its lowest level in the past 15 months [against the euro],” a US-based fund manager said. “When the dollar takes a beating like this, metals are going to rally."

The euro rose 1.4 percent to 1.4543 against the dollar this morning largely on increased risk appetite and after a successful bond auction in Spain.

But the yellow metal has edged down marginally from its intraday high since the open of equity markets in New York.

"We've seen some quite positive earning reports from the likes of Intel and Freeport-McMoRan, which had the Dow up by over 175 points," the fund manager said.

“Despite all the dire headlines of late, Wall Street doesn't think the economy is hanging off the cliff,” he added. “Some folks are looking at riskier assets this morning as the stock bulls have returned.”

Standard Bank echoed this sentiment in a note. "Fears that the global economic recovery might be in jeopardy, sparked by Standard & Poor's ratings outlook downgrade of the US, have been dispelled by strong corporate earnings results and a steady improvement in US housing data," analyst Marc Ground wrote.

Existing US home sales rose 3.7 percent in March to an annualised rate of 5.1 million units, slightly ahead of expectations, the National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday morning.

Nevertheless, many investors continue to express concerns about the burgeoning debt crisis in the US and Europe and inflation around the world.

Bolstering this argument was S&P's surprise outlook downgrade of US long-term debt to "negative" to "stable".

"This latest chapter in the saga of sovereign debt concerns highlights gold's benefits as a risk-hedge and currency diversifier. It also presents new challenges for investors who traditionally, in times of uncertainty, steer capital towards US Treasuries," Marcus Grubb, managing director of the Investment at the World Gold Council, said in a statement.

Additionally, the US government does not have a credible plan to cut the deficit, International Monetary Fund chief economist Olivier Blanchard said on Wednesday according to French paper Le Monde.

Comex silver for May delivery also soared on Wednesday - it was recently trading up about one dollar at $44.90 per ounce, which is a 31-year high. The closely watched gold-silver ratio has dropped to 33.5 - a 28-year low.

Forex: USD/CHF extends slide to fresh lows

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The Swiss Franc continues its rally against the Dollar. The USD/CHF fell further below 0.8900 and reached a new all time low at 0.8878. The pair remains trading near session low, holding a bearish bias. Greenback is headed toward the tenth daily decline out of the last 12 trading days.

The recovery of the Dollar earlier found resistance at 0.8930 and the pair resumed its downtrend as the Swissy strengthened across the board.

To the downside, support levels could be located at 0.8860 and below at 0.8820 while to the upside, probable resistance levels lie at 0.8890 and above at 0.8930 and 0.8965.

Wall Street jumps on optimism, Dollar slump continues

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – Stocks rose sharply in Wall Street with the Dow Jones ending at the highest level since June 2008. Gold reached fresh record highs above $1,500 an ounce as the Dollar posted losses across the board.

The DOW rose 1.52% on Wednesday and has risen more than 300 point in three days. Earnings reports and better-than-expected housing data triggered optimism in Wall Street.

In the currency market, the Aussie and the Swiss Franc were among the best performers. The Yen trimmed losses on American hours but finished mostly lower in the market.

The EUR/USD reached fresh 15-month highs at 1.4545, pulled back afterwards to 1.4485 but managed to rise back above 1.4500. Cable remained steady on American hours consolidating around 1.6400, barely below April highs.

The USD/CHF extended its decline to fresh record lows at 0.8870/80 and remains under pressure. Greenback is also trading at record lows against the Aussie.

US yields continue to grind lower

Forex: USD/CHF steady near daily low

FXstreet.com (Buenos Aires) – USD/CHF remains steady around 0.8960, near daily low set at 0.8942 just around US opening. The pair has been falling straight for 5 days already, accumulating over 400 pips to the downside this month. All time low, set on March 16th following Japan’s earthquake, lies at 0.8860.

The pair, that seems extremely oversold according to Valeria Bednarik, Fxstreet.com chief analyst, holds its “bearish momentum intact both in 1 and 4 hours charts, and despite extreme oversold readings are clear in both, pair seems not ready for a bullish corrective movement. Lose of 0.8940 daily low, should accelerate the slide towards mentioned record low”.

Forex: Pound fails to recover, back under pressure

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – Despite moving away from session lows against commodity currencies, Cable reached fresh lows against its European rivals and the Yen while GBP/USD failed to hold above 1.6300 and fell below 1.6270, approaching daily lows.

The Pound weakened earlier across the board following inflation data in the UK and after pulling back, started to fell once again as stocks in the US decline, with the Dow Jones reaching weekly lows.

The EUR/GBP broke above 0.8900 for the first time since October of last year and is approaching to 0.8940; if it rises further it would be trading at the highest level in a year.

Against the Swiss Franc and the Yen, the Pound is currently at daily lows. GBP/CHF has fallen more than 300 pips since the beginning of the week and at the moment trades below 1.4550 while GBP/JPY is back below 136.00, looking for a new low.

The Pound only managed to hold against AUD, CAD and NZD; the three currencies weakened considerably in the last hours amid a decline in commodity prices and risk aversion.

Forex: EUR/USD fails to rise back above 1.4500

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The Euro rebounded on American hours at 1.4435 and rose to 1.4495. The EUR/USD has been steady in the last hours, hovering below 1.4500, consolidating a gain of 50 pips from the price it had at the beginning of the Asian session.

“The pair is trading above the critical support level at 1.4480 and so long the pair remains above this level, the target is set at the 1.4625 resistance level, but breaching the support at 1.4480 would send the pair to the support at 1.4375”, the ecPulse.com Analysis Team said.

The EUR/USD reached on European hours a fresh 14-month high at 1.4517, extending its rally from January lows that lie at 1.2865/70. Andrei Tratseuski from Forex Club attributes the rise to three main reasons: 1) interest rate differentials between the ECB and the FED, 2) European Union sovereign debt fears receding and 3) technical weakness in the Dollar Index.

US GOLD - Comex gold still down but weak US GP data lends some support

New York 25/02/2011 - Gold on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange regained some of its footing on Friday after slipping overnight due to easing oil prices, benefitting when US fourth-quarter GDP revision came in below expectations.

Gold futures for April delivery were recently trading down $8.20 at $1,407.60 per ounce in New York.

But it had fallen as low as $1,400.10 in electronic after-hours trade soon after oil dropped by $3 per barrel based on news that Saudi Arabia will make up for any shortages resulting from civil unrest in Libya.

"Gold is lacking direction as traders are navigating some strong cross-currents," a US-based fund manager said.

"There's now a clear consensus that [Libyan ruler] Kaddafi’s reign is far past its expiration date and should end before he has the opportunity to so something truly insane,” he said. “This, along with the Saudi's pledge to support the supply side, has allowed crude prices to stabilise and has coaxed some risk back into to the market.

But there is still some real concern that the protests could spread across the region so safe-haven is still alive and well, he added.

Additionally, Comex gold has rallied by about six percent this month and climbed within about 1.5 percent of the all-time contract high of $1,432.50, which was set on December 7.

"The air was getting pretty thin, so there's clearly some element of end-of-the-week profit-taking," the fund manager said. “We're going to experience a slight lull and may even see a mild correction before making a run towards the record in the coming days and weeks.”

Nevertheless, gold did find some support this morning after the US government revised its fourth-quarter GDP down to 2.8 percent - below a predicted 3.3 percent revision.

"Once news came out US GDP missed the mark, gold predictably firmed by a couple dollars. That news alone should allow the market to end the week above $1,400," the manager said.

In other precious metals, Comex silver for May delivery was down 32 cents at $32.86 per ounce. Trade has ranged from $32.06 to $33.13.

Platinum for April delivery on the Nymex was up $10.20 at $1,797.00 per ounce, while the March palladium contract was up $7.50 at $785.25.

Forex: USD/JPY holds above Thursday’s low

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The USD/JPY is moving sideways in a small range between 81.85 and 81.65 (daily lows). Yesterday the pair fell to the lowest level in 20 days to 81.62 and bounced afterwards but the recovery found resistance around the 82.00 level on Asian hours.

“Corrective attempt remains capped by 82.00 zone for now, with fresh weakness looking for test of 81.10/80.92, key higher lows, loss of which will signal an end of recovery phase and expose 80.24, 01 Nov 2010 15-year low”, said Slobodan Drvenica, analyst at Windsor Brokers Ltd said.

Greenback is headed toward the biggest weekly decline since the beginning of 2011 against the Yen after retreating further from 83.96 (Feb 16 high).

Forex: Dollar weakness to stay

FXstreet.com (Buenos Aires) – As week comes to an end, dollar weakness turns more obvious despite current risk aversion environment, based on Middle East and African jitters; the American currency quotes quite near record lows against the two major safe havens, with USD/CHF at 0.9283 after failing to regain 0.9300 today, and USD/JPY around 81.80.

At the same time, and despite oil and gold have give up some ground today, both AUD and CAD held their strength as USD/CAD quotes around 0.9800, levels not seen since March 2008 and AUD/USD holds around 1.0150, barely 100 pips below the 35 year high set past December.

EUR/USD had finally been on corrective mode today, although well above 1.3700 ahead of next week key events, ECB monetary policy announcement, and US Nonfarm Payrolls. Indeed, market expects some hawkish tone pointing for a rake hike in the euro zone, while again will be looking for disappointing readings in the American employment situation. Could news be shocking enough to revert current trend? Possibilities seem quite small right now, although anything could happen in the forex market.

Forex: Swiss Franc posts weekly gains across the board

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The Swiss Franc and the Yen were the best performers during the week as unrest in North Africa and Middle East continue. USD/CHF fell to new all time lows on Thursday and despite rising slightly on Friday, posted the lowest weekly close ever and lost more than 150 pips for the second week in a row.

According to Fan Yang, Chief Technical Strategist at FXTimes, in the short term the pair has a potential to recover further ground but in the long term the bias remains bearish. “The 4H chart shows further upside potential towards 0.95-0.9560 zone. But such a sharp retracement would suggest ranging action as opposed to bearish action. We might still get a decline from 0.95 or 0.9560, but from there, the 0.89 target should be shelved. On the other hand, respect of 0.94 shows that bears are dominant and strengthens the case to 0.89”.

The Swissy retreated in the market on Friday, probably on profit taking and amid an improvement in market sentiment but the decline was not enough to erase gains.

GBP/CHF fell 500 pips from Monday’s opening at 1.5360 and reached weekly lows at 1.4890 while EUR/CHF declined for the second week in a row and moved further away from the 1.3000 level. Against commodity currencies the Swiss also rose but finished far from the highs.

Forex: USD ends week with mixed results

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) – The Dollar finished the week with more losses than gains in the market. EUR/USD fell on Friday after being unable to hold above 1.3800, to end the week hovering around 1.3730/60. Despite the retreated from 3-week highs at 1.3839, the Euro managed to finished above 1.3700, posting the highest weekly close since early November.

The Euro finished mixed across the board. Next Thursday the ECB will decide on monetary policy. According to the Danske Bank, the ECB Governing Council meeting looks set to be unusually interesting: “We will find out if the ECB plans to continue with full allotments in its market operations”.

USD/CHF fell sharply and posted the lowest weekly close on history while GBP/USD failed to hold to gains and finished the week lower, around 1.6100, on retreat after hitting at 1.6271 on Wednesday, the highest price in 20 days. The Swiss Franc and the Yen were the best performers during the week.

Among commodity currencies, the worst performer was the Kiwi that sank across the board affected by an earthquake that shook New Zealand on Tuesday. AUD/NZD rose to 1.3547, hitting the highest price in 10 years

The New Zealand Dollar outperformed in overnight trade, overlooking mixed economic data and a selloff across Asian stock exchanges, amid speculation that Fonterra Cooperative Group Ltd – the world’s largest dairy exporter – may raise its payout to farmers after milk powder prices hit a 31-month high. Higher payouts promise to boost hiring and spending in New Zealand’s top export industry, adding fuel to the sluggish economic recovery. The currency rose 0.5 percent on average against its major counterparts.

The New ZealandPerformance of Services Index slid to 50.8 in January, showing the non-manufacturing sector expanded at the slowest pace in 15 months. Meanwhile, Credit Card Spending soared 5.6 percent from the preceding year, showing the fastest annual growth rate since May 2008. The MSCI Asia Pacific regional benchmark index fell as downward pressure from last week’s Chinese RRR increase was compounded by spreading tensions in the Middle East, with uprisings spreading to Libya, Bahrain and Iran.

UK House Prices surged in February, rising 3.1 percent from the previous month according to report from Righmove Plc, an online listing of for-sale properties. The increase is the largest in four months. Looking past month-to-month volatility however, the trend in house prices remains troubling. Indeed, the same report showed prices added just 0.3 percent from a year before, putting the annualized growth rate at the slowest in 16 months.

Risk sentiment is likely to remain a key catalyst for currency markets in European hours as investors continue to fret about mounting tensions sweeping the Middle East and North Africa. Stock index futures ticked lower and stocks sold off in Asia after Saif al-Islam Qaddafi, the son of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, spoke out on state-run television warning of an impending civil war as Tunisian- and Egyptian-style protests were met with a harsh response from security forces. Libya is the world’s 12th-largest oil exporter.

On the data front, Germany’s IFO Survey of business confidence is expected to show sentiment soured a bit, with the closely-watched “Expectations” index down to 107.5 in February having hit a record-high 107.8 in the previous month. Meanwhile, February’s preliminary Euro Zone Purchasing Manager Index figures are set to reveal region-wide economic activity decelerated for the first time since October, driven by a slowdown in manufacturing-sector growth.

US Dollar Recovery Depends on Nonfarm Payrolls, Dow Jones

The US Dollar finished the week lower against almost all G10 counterparts, continuing its multi-month downtrend ahead of a critical week of economic event risk. A fairly disappointing revision to Q4 GDP capped a week of mixed data, and all eyes now turn to the coming week’s critical US Nonfarm Payrolls report. The NFPs release needs little introduction as one of the most market-moving reports across global financial markets, and February’s result will be particularly significant given January’s sharply below-forecast jobs figure.

A busy week of economic event risk will shape expectations and likely force sharp short-term moves ahead of the NFP release, and it will be critical to monitor financial market moves as the US Dollar nears significant lows against major counterparts. Consensus forecasts currently call for a respectable 190k jobs gain through the month of February—consistent with expectations of substantial improvements on January’s clear disappointment. We will watch earlier-week ISM Manufacturing, ADP Employment Change, Initial Jobless Claims, and ISM Services results to gauge the likelihood that February payrolls meet lofty forecasts. Uncertainty surrounding the future of US Federal Reserve monetary policy puts all eyes on whether a broader economic recovery will be enough to produce similar improvements in the domestic labor market.

The US Federal Reserve shows little urgency in withdrawing extraordinary monetary policy stimulus amidst generally weak inflation and lackluster jobs growth. Controversial Quantitative Easing measures have been a major driving force behind US Dollar weakness, and it could arguably take a substantial shift in the Fed’s stance and rhetoric to force a sustained Greenback recovery. In the absence of such a change, the US Dollar may need a broader shift in financial markets to drive a major reversal.

The S&P 500 saw a sharp pullback on a broader flight to safety on geopolitical turmoil in the Middle East, and the USD rallied as one of the world’s foremost safe-haven currencies. Yet a later bounce in stock markets suggests bulls have yet to give up the fight, and we may need to see a more sustained shift to make any serious argument for a market top (and US Dollar bottom). CFTC Commitment of Traders data shows that Non-Commercial traders (typically large speculators) remain heavily net-short the US currency on a steady downtrend. And though such one-sided sentiment typically occurs near major market turns, sentiment extremes are only clear in hindsight and extremely difficult to time.

Trend traders will likely favor continued US Dollar weakness into the week ahead, and it is difficult to make the case for a substantive turnaround absent a material improvement in USD sentiment. FX Options market risk reversals likewise suggest that many traders have continued to bet on and hedge against Greenback weakness. It would likely take a material improvement in US economic data or a similarly large turn lower in ‘risk’ to force a substantive USD bounce. Given that the first week of the month quite often sets the pace for subsequent trading, we will pay special attention to whether the US currency shows any real signs of recovery through March.

Sweet Europe, sour America?

(Reuters) - Investors are finding themselves with a new kind of balancing act -- one in which they have to juggle with three major regions posing three significantly different circumstances.

Europe's bank stress testing, the focus of much of the past week's market focus, is but one ball in the air.

First there is the United States, which is believed to be facing another slowdown, if not a double-dip recession.

Then there is Europe, suffering a debt crisis and austerity-bound, yet suddenly surprising everyone with an unexpected burst of economic vigor.

Thirdly, comes Asia, growing away so merrily that investors are beginning to be concerned that too much zeal will be exercised in trying to slow things down.

On top of that there is the decoupling of economics and earnings -- keeping bond yields down and lifting stocks. The latest investment flow data from EPFR Global showed "yield hungry but skittish" investors flooding into bonds, but world stocks are up more than 7 percent for the month.

"We are really in a much more difficult stage of the recovery right now," Michala Marcussen, head of global economics at Societe Generale, said at a briefing with Reuters journalists.

She described markets as struggling with a "rotating crisis" in which one problem in one region becomes the focus of concern, only to be quickly replaced by another in another region.

"That ping pong is likely to go on for some time," she said.

EUROPEAN TIGER?

Entering the new week, investors will first have to deal with any fallout from the stress tests of 91 European banks, due out of Friday after much fanfare.

Markets have been fairly calm about the tests, which, with Greece and other peripheral euro zone economies in mind, were designed to see how banks would fare in serious future crises.

The consensus has been that some smaller banks may fail but that the amounts needed to recapitalize them against future crises would be manageable or indeed in many cases have already been put on one side by governments.

Franz Wenzel, strategist at AXA Investment Managers in Paris, sees no broad impact for equities from the results, even if a number of small banks need to have capital hikes.

"Recapitalization will affect the usual suspects: small regional banks. But all this will be done in a smooth and harmonized way with local authorities, and it shouldn't be a market-disruption event," he said.

Of much more impact, however, may be highly surprising signs of economic revival in Europe.

European purchasing managers' indexes in the past week showed private sector business activity accelerating in July, surprising economists who had expected a slowdown.

They indicated third-quarter euro zone growth of around 0.6-0.7 percent, double the 0.3 percent forecast in the most recent Reuters poll.

This was followed up by German business sentiment posting a record jump in July to its highest level in three years.

Non-euro zone member Britain also surprised with its economy growing twice as fast as expected in the second quarter of this year propelled by a sharp pick-up in services and the biggest rise in construction in almost 50 years.

Investors being investors, of course, these robust numbers triggered some new concerns about monetary tightening -- hence the spike in the euro and pound against the dollar.

WEAKLING AMERICA?

The biggest piece of data likely to focus investors' attention in the coming week is U.S. second-quarter GDP, out on Friday.

The U.S. economy is clearly coming off the boil, if, indeed, it was boiling. After three quarters of solid growth it is showing signs of slowing with firms still reluctant to hire and the housing sector seemingly unable to exit a prolonged rut.

It was enough, during the past week to prompt promises from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke for more action if there are further signs of faltering.

This would particularly be the case if jobs don't pick up.

"We are ready and will act if the economy does not continue to improve, if we don't see the kind of improvements in the labor market that we are hoping for and expecting," he told the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee.

This admission that all is not well has broad implications for investors even if other global drivers -- major emerging market economies, such as China, and now Europe -- are still on the upswing.

The question could turn out to be whether markets and other economies can thrive without the U.S. engine. History suggests not.

Ngân hàng Trung ương Nhật điều chỉnh tăng dự báo về nền kinh tế nước này lần đầu tiên trong gần 3 năm trước dấu hiệu cho thấy kinh tế đã lập đáy suy thoái trong quý 1/2009.

Tuyên bố mới nhất của Ngân hàng Trung ương Nhật nhận định: “Tình hình kinh tế rất tệ hại, tuy nhiên xuất khẩu và sản xuất đang tăng trưởng trở lại.” Trước đó Ngân hàng Trung ương Nhật đã nhận xét kinh tế Nhật đang đi xuống mạnh.

Đây là lần đầu tiên từ tháng 7/2006, Ngân hàng Trung ương Nhật điều chỉnh tăng đánh giá đối với nền kinh tế.

Thống đốc Ngân hàng Trung ương Nhật và các đồng sự sẽ có thể mở rộng chương trình mua nợ doanh nghiệp và chính phủ ngay cả khi khả năng giảm phát đang hiển hiện.

Chỉ số Nikkei 225 của TTCK Nhật hạ 0,4% trong tuần qua.

Thống đốc Ngân hàng Trung ương Nhật cho rằng kinh tế Nhật đã thoát khỏi thời kỳ “rơi tự do”. Số liệu GDP mới nhất nhiều khả năng sẽ tốt hơn mức suy giảm 15,2% trong quý 1/2009, mức đi xuống tệ nhất từ năm 1955.

Các quan chức Ngân hàng Trung ương Nhật đều lo ngại về những rủi ro đối với tăng trưởng kinh tế nước này, các doanh nghiệp sẽ vẫn gặp nhiều khó khăn. Ngân hàng Trung ương dự đoán tốc độ đi xuống của nền kinh tế sẽ chậm lại dần dần.

IMF: Kinh tế châu Á sẽ hồi phục vào năm 2010

IMF dự báo kinh tế châu Á năm 2009 tăng trưởng 1,3% và lên mức 4,3% trong năm 2010. Châu Á khó có thể lấy lại tăng trưởng như trước khủng hoảng.

Năm 2009 sẽ đi vào lịch sử là năm đầu tiên tính từ Chiến tranh Thế giới thứ Hai hoạt động kinh tế đi xuống trên phạm vi toàn cầu. Công ty tài chính tại các nền kinh tế phát triển chịu nhiều áp lực, tín dụng thu hẹp, tài sản của người dân bốc hơi, bất ổn tăng cao.

Tất cả những yếu tố trên dẫn đến nhu cầu trên toàn thế giới sụt giảm nghiêm trọng, lĩnh vực tài chính và doanh nghiệp trượt dốc, nhà hoạch định chính sách kinh tế vì thế phải đương đầu với nhiều thách thức.

Quý 4/2008, GDP toàn cầu suy giảm với tốc độ tính theo trung bình năm là 6,25%, dự kiến mức suy giảm trên lại được thiết lập trong quý 1/2009.

Khủng hoảng toàn cầu ảnh hưởng đến châu Á với tốc độ gây bất ngờ. Kinh tế châu Á còn đi xuống với tốc độ nhanh hơn so với những nước thuộc tâm khủng hoảng.

Quý 4/2008, GDP châu Á không tính Trung Quốc và Ấn Độ hạ gần 15% nếu tính theo trung bình năm.

Gần đây, kinh tế khu vực này đón một số dấu hiệu ổn định. Đà suy giảm của xuất khẩu đã chững lại, tình hình sản xuất công nghiệp có cải thiện. Áp lực trên thị trường tín dụng từ tháng 3/2009 đã giảm bớt.

Bất chấp yếu tố tích cực trên, mọi chuyện mới chỉ ở mức ổn định hơn chứ chưa thể nói đến sự hồi phục. Áp lực tài chính toàn cầu vẫn ở mức cao, áp lực này chỉ có giảm nếu được giải quyết bằng các chính sách thích hợp. Suy thoái càng kéo dài, áp lực dồn tích đối với lĩnh vực doanh nghiệp và các ngân hàng sẽ đi theo hướng lĩnh vực này gây hại đến lĩnh vực khác.

Tại sao châu Á lại chịu ảnh hưởng nặng nề từ khủng hoảng toàn cầu?

Thương mại

Câu trả lời nằm chính ở bản chất sự hội nhập của kinh tế châu Á vào kinh tế toàn cầu. Tốc độ tăng trưởng ấn tượng của thương mại liên vùng những thập kỷ qua khiến nhiều người nghĩ rằng châu Á có thể tránh ra khỏi chu trình kinh tế của các nước phát triển.

Trên thực tế, phần lớn tăng trưởng thương mại liên vùng trong những năm gần đây đến từ sản xuất linh kiện và thiết bị. Báo cáo triển vọng kinh tế tháng 4/2008 cho thấy phần lớn hàng xuất khẩu châu Á được tiêu thụ bên ngoài khu vực này và như vậy sự liên quan của châu Á với nền kinh tế các nước phát triển tăng dần theo thời gian.

Mối tương quan giữa tăng trưởng nhập khẩu của Mỹ và xuất khẩu liên vùng châu Á ngày một mạnh mẽ hơn.

Khủng hoảng tác động nhiều đến châu Á bởi sản xuất khu vực này trọng tâm vào lĩnh vực chịu ảnh hưởng mạnh bởi việc tín dụng toàn cầu thắt chặt. Châu Á phụ thuộc vào tăng trưởng hàng xuất khẩu công nghệ trung và cao cấp bao gồm ô tô, hàng điện tử, máy móc.

Xuất khẩu ô tô của Nhật trong khoảng thời gian từ tháng 9/2008 đến tháng 3/2009 đã giảm tới 70%. So sánh tăng trưởng GDP quý 4/2008 của nhiều nền kinh tế phát triển và mới nổi cho thấy những nền kinh tế nào có tỷ trọng ngành sản xuất trong GDP lớn chịu ảnh hưởng nặng nề hơn.

Từ tháng 9/2008 đến tháng 2/2009, xuất khẩu máy móc châu Á giảm 70% (tính trung bình theo năm). Tốc độ này gấp rưỡi tốc độ sụt giảm của loại hàng hoá trên trong thời kỳ bong bóng công nghệ vỡ năm 2000, gấp ba lần so với thời kỳ khủng hoảng tài chính châu Á.

Tài chính

Người ta từng cho rằng châu Á sẽ đứng ngoài cuộc khủng hoảng tài chính tại các nước giàu. Tổ chức tài chính châu Á có tiềm lực vốn tốt, hoạt động liên quan đến thị trường chứng khoán dưới chuẩn của Mỹ không nhiều, không tham gia vào những hoạt động cho vay chứa nhiều rủi ro dù thị trường bất động sản tại nhiều nước có hình thành bong bóng.

Cuối cùng tất cả giả định đều đúng, khủng hoảng dưới chuẩn và sự sụt giảm của giá nhà đất không trực tiếp gây tổn hại đến hệ thống ngân hàng châu Á. Tuy nhiên, ảnh hưởng gián tiếp của biến động trên thị trường tài chính toàn cầu đối với châu Á không hề nhỏ.

Nguyên nhân của điều này là mối quan hệ tài chính giữa châu Á và phần còn lại của thế giới đã chặt chẽ hơn trong thập kỷ qua. Mối quan hệ này thể hiện qua mối liên hệ liên biên giới, doanh nghiệp châu Á vay tiền khá nhiều trên thị trường trái phiếu quốc tế. Việc châu Á tham gia và thị trường tài chính quốc tế góp phần quan trọng làm nên tăng trưởng trong khu vực. Xu thế ban đầu nay đang đi ngược trở lại, dẫn đến sự căng thẳng trên thị trường tài chính.

Dòng chảy vốn đến châu Á giảm bởi thua lỗ tăng cao, ngân hàng các nước ngày một thu hẹp hoạt động liên quan đến thị trường các nước mới nổi, dù là trực tiếp hay thông qua các chi nhánh.

Những ảnh hưởng ban đầu không đáng kể

Khủng hoảng tài chính chậm ảnh hưởng đến nước thu nhập thấp châu Á bởi bản chất gián tiếp của chính cuộc khủng hoảng này. Nước thu nhập thấp tại châu Á cũng không chịu ảnh hưởng mạnh ban đầu bởi quy mô, trình độ phát triển còn hạn chế của thị trường tài chính các nước này.

Chính sách

Nhà hoạch định chính sách kinh tế tại các nước thu nhập thấp gặp khó khăn trong việc cân bằng tăng trưởng kinh tế, thị trường việc làm và đảm bảo ổn định kinh tế vĩ mô. Đồng nội tệ hạ giá không có nhiều tác dụng kích thích xuất khẩu trong bối cảnh kinh tế của các đối tác thương mại lớn cũng đang suy giảm.

Chính sách tài khoá: Doanh thu của các chính phủ chịu nhiều áp lực tiêu cực. Nguồn thu từ thương mại và thuế doanh thu giảm mạnh. Thiếu những nguồn trên, chương trình đầu tư công hạn chế, trong một số trường hợp nếu không có sự điều chỉnh sẽ tác động xấu tới dự trữ ngoại tệ.

Chính sách tiền tệ: Tại những nước thu nhập thấp, vai trò của hệ thống tài chính trong việc cung cấp tín dụng hỗ trợ tăng trưởng hạn chế bởi trình độ phát triển của thị trường. Hơn thế nữa, công cụ quản lý chính sách không hiệu quả hạn chế khả năng của Ngân hàng Trung ương trong việc tiến hành các hoạt động tiền tệ.

Dòng vốn vào khu vực châu Á giảm mạnh ít nhất tính đến tháng 3/2009, nhà đầu tư tổ chức toàn cầu và các quỹ đầu cơ giảm sự quan tâm đến thị trường các nước mới nổi nói chung.

Giá cổ phiếu vì thế cũng chịu áp lực tiêu cực, dù đã tăng trong thời gian gần đây, tính toán của Morgan Stanley cho thấy cho thấy chỉ số của các thị trường chứng khoán các nước mới nổi châu Á vẫn thấp hơn 40% so với mức khởi đầu vào năm 2008. Ngoại lệ duy nhất là thị trường chứng khoán Trung Quốc nhờ ảnh hưởng từ kế hoạch 586 tỷ USD kích thích kinh tế được chính phủ đưa ra vào năm 2008.

Các doanh nghiệp châu Á đang ứng phó như thế nào?

Doanh nghiệp châu Á trước tình hình nhu cầu thế giới sụt giảm đã cắt giảm sản xuất và giảm bớt hàng tồn kho. Hai tháng đầu năm 2009, sản xuất công nghiệp tại Nhật và nhiều nước công nghiệp mới giảm với tốc độ hơn 50% tính theo trung bình 3 tháng, mức hạ kỷ lục.

Sản xuất thu hẹp với mục đích giảm hàng tồn kho. Lượng hàng xuất đi cũng giảm mạnh đến mức lượng hàng tồn kho đã tăng lên mức cao hiếm thấy tại nhiều nền kinh tế. Gần đây, số hàng tồn kho này đã giảm bớt, đặc biệt tại Hàn Quốc nơi xuất khẩu tăng trở lại nhờ đồng nội tệ rất yếu.

Dù vậy, việc điều chỉnh lượng hàng tồn kho để quay lại mức cân xứng với lượng hàng xuất như trước khủng hoảng trong khi nhu cầu toàn cầu đi xuống sẽ gây ảnh hưởng xấu đến GDP trong vài quý tới.

Đầu tư tư nhân chững lại đáng kể. Tốc độ sụt giảm của đầu tư tư nhân tệ hại nhất tại Nhật và nước công nghiệp mới. Nhu cầu hàng hoá từ nước ngoài giảm mạnh, lợi nhuận giảm, lòng tin doanh nghiệp cũng không khá hơn. So với cùng kỳ, đầu tư doanh nghiệp quý 4/2008 tại Nhật giảm 15% và tại nhiều nước công nghiệp mới – tốc độ này cao gần bằng thời kỳ khủng hoảng tài chính châu Á.

Tiêu dùng cá nhân biến động nhẹ. Tốc độ tiêu dùng cáo nhân giảm trung bình chỉ khoảng 0,5%. Nguyên nhân cho việc này là bởi giá hàng hoá, đặc biệt là giá dầu và thực phẩm hạ. Hơn thế nữa, người dân có thể dựa vào nguồn tiền tiết kiệm dồi dào tại các ngân hàng.

Tại những nước chịu ảnh hưởng mạnh bởi tín dụng thắt chặt và giá nhà đất hạ, tiêu dùng người dân hạ mạnh hơn.

Dù các công ty châu Á phải thu hẹp các dự án đầu tư và thu hẹp sản xuất, cho đến nay họ luôn cố gắng giữ công ăn việc làm cho người lao động, hạn chế bớt những hoạt động không cần thiết.

Tuy nhiên nếu tình trạng nhu cầu sụt giảm kéo dài, các công ty sẽ không còn sự lựa chọn nào ngoài việc tái cơ cấu, khu vực này hẳn sẽ chứng kiến làn sóng thâu tóm và sáp nhập lớn.

Tỷ lệ thất nghiệp tại châu Á có thể lên gần mức thời khủng hoảng tài chính châu Á. Trên thực tế, tỷ lệ thất nghiệp đã tăng tại khắp châu Á.

Nhu cầu nội địa tại Trung Quốc không giảm nhiều, yếu tố này tuy nhiên không hề có tác dụng nào đối với châu Á do chính sách của Trung Quốc trong việc bảo vệ kinh tế Trung Quốc khỏi ảnh hưởng của khủng hoảng toàn cầu. Cụ thể, Trung Quốc trọng tâm vào phát triển đầu tư công chứ không phải đầu tư sản xuất, loại hình đầu tư này sử dụng nguồn hàng hoá, nguyên vật liệu nội địa.

Triển vọng hồi phục

Báo cáo Triển vọng kinh tế thế giới (World Economic Outlook) công bố tháng 4/2009 cho rằng tăng trưởng kinh tế toàn cầu sẽ hồi phục vào đầu năm 2010. Thời điểm hồi phục phụ thuộc vào sự ổn định của thị trường tài chính toàn cầu tại thị trường các nước phát triển.

Sẽ mất một khoảng thời gian mới thể giải quyết được số tài sản xấu và hồi phục niềm tin vào bảng cân đối kế toán của các ngân hàng.

Những biện pháp toàn diện cải thiện tình hình của thị trường tín dụng, hỗ trợ từ chính sách tài khoá và tiền tệ cuối cùng sẽ giúp nền kinh tế các nước phát triển hồi phục vào năm sau.

Vấn đề hiện nay đối với các nền kinh tế châu Á là liệu có phải đến khi điều này xảy ra, khu vực này mới có thể lấy lại tăng trưởng như trước khủng hoảng?

Lịch sử cho thấy khi nhu cầu tại các nước phát triển tăng, châu Á mới có thể thoát khỏi khủng hoảng. Từ năm 1980 cho đến nay, sự hồi phục của kinh tế châu Á thường đến từ xuất khảu. Nhu cầu toàn cầu và sự hạ giá của đồng nội tệ cho phép châu Á hồi phục theo mô hình chữ V.

Lần này, không có yếu tố kích thích nào tương tự như vậy dành cho châu Á. Đóng góp của xuất khẩu vào GDP sẽ giảm trong 2 năm tới.

Nhu cầu tiêu dùng nội địa đi xuống bởi những cú sốc từ bên ngoài tiếp tục gây áp lực lên đầu tư và tiêu dùng tư nhân. Tổng đầu tư cố định trong lĩnh vực tư nhân sẽ vẫn đi xuống. Trên thực tế, xét đến liên quan giữa xuất khẩu liên quan đến nhu cầu nội địa tại một số nền kinh tế châu Á cho thấy sẽ mất một năm rưỡi nữa, tăng trưởng đầu tư tại Hàn Quốc, Malaysia, Singapore và Thái Lan mới trở lại mức trước khủng hoảng.

Tiêu dùng cá nhân dự kiến vẫn ở mức thấp bởi tỷ lệ thất nghiệp cao, lòng tin đi xuống và giá tài sản (trong đó có giá nhà đất) hạ.

Nhìn chung, chính sách nới lỏng tiền tệ và tài khoá sẽ hạn chế bớt tác động xấu lên nền kinh tế. Thế nhưng tất cả là không đủ để mang lại tăng trưởng bền vững cho khu vực.

Kinh tế châu Á năm 2009 sẽ tăng trưởng 1,3% và lên mức 4,3% trong năm 2010. Tốc độ tăng trưởng năm 2008 là 5,1%. Châu Á khó có thể lấy lại tăng trưởng như trước khủng hoảng.

Gold continues on its merry way

Gold prices in Vietnam hit an all-time high of VND20.43 million a tael Thursday, as globally the metal remained in an uptrend.

Saigon Jewelry Holding Company gold closed the day at VND20.41 million a tael (1.2 ounces) in Ho Chi Minh City and VND20.43 million in Hanoi, VND250,000 higher than Wednesday.

In Tokyo, gold rose for the third straight day to hit a new eight-week high above US$942 an ounce, buoyed by firmness in oil prices and the dollar’s recent slide to its lowest level in nearly five months.

But gains were mainly driven by funds buying US gold futures, resulting in arbitrage cash gold purchases, while a rise in Asian currencies against the dollar capped the price of gold denominated in regional currencies, traders said.

“It’s up mainly because of short-covering in the market,” said Ronald Leung, director of Lee Cheong Gold Dealers in Hong Kong.

“The dollar is weakening again and the oil price is up, which favors gold for a little while.”

Spot gold rose 0.5 percent to $941.90 an ounce by 05:37 GMT, compared with the New York notional close of $937.10.

On the London Bullion Market, the price of gold rose to $940.89 from $939.50 late on Wednesday.

Though domestic gold rose to a new record level, SJC said not many people bought or sold the metal Thursday.

But bullion trading volumes were very high at gold exchanges. Vietnam Gold Exchange posted a volume of 154,000 taels and Sacombank Jewelry, 370,000 taels.

Huynh Trung Khanh, vice chairman of the Vietnam Gold Business Association and a consultant to the World Gold Council, said gold could climb to VND21 million if global prices reach $980.

Tran Thanh Hai, general director of the Vietnam Gold Business Company, which operates the Vietnam Gold Exchange, agreed saying the price is likely to top VND21 million in the next three months.

Nobel laureate Paul Krugman said Vietnam needed to bide its time while 'the bigger economies get their act together'

Paul Krugman’s advice for Vietnam: don’t lose sight of financial regulation as private business takes off and the “invisible hand” of the market grows stronger.

The Nobel Prize-winning economist said strict regulation of the financial sector and government safety nets would be key to greasing the wheels of Vietnam’s transition to a market-based economy.

Speaking at a seminar in Ho Chi Minh City Thursday, The New York Times columnist and Professor at Princeton University said the global economic crisis was “stabilizing” but that there were no clear signs o a full recovery.

“Things are getting worse, but they’re getting worse more slowly,” he said, citing less rapid US job losses and a slowdown in the fall of industrial production and exports in key economies.

“I don’t think we’ve hit bottom, but the bottom is not too much further below us,” he said. “My big concern is that we don’t hit the bottom and bounce, we hit the bottom and stay there. It’s not obvious where recovery comes from.”

He said there was not much Vietnam could do to help itself recover other than to stay smart, hope and wait.

Shadow banking

Krugman spoke at length of how the deregulation of the US financial sector allowed the shadow banking system to set off the financial crises that transformed into a global economic recession.

Institutions that provide the services of banks without banking regulation, including but not limited to hedge funds, money funds and investment banks, have become notorious for their role in the meltdown.

This system of institutions, known as the shadow banking sector, held trillions of dollars in the US by 2007. With so much money, the vulnerable and unregulated system in which investments are risky and unprotected, became an integral part of US and global finance.

Krugman blamed deregulation that began in the Reagan-Thatcher era for the development.

“We had a whole set of precautionary measures coming out of the great depression that were designed to prevent a recurrence of the banking crisis.”

Then the world watched in dismay as the banking crisis of 2008 spawned global panic.

“We were persuaded after about 1980 that we should have the same kind of free market principles for finance that we had for wheat or airline services,” said Krugman. “It turned out that our grandfathers were right and we were wrong.”

The Nobel laureate stood by one of his trademark lines about talking to economists:

“Don’t trust anyone under 50,” he said, explaining that anyone brought up in the new school of economics had not been taught the lessons our grandfathers learned.

He went on to repeat another one of his mantras: “anything that does what a bank does, anything that has to be rescued in crises the way banks are, should be regulated like a bank.”

He said the government officials who oversaw this deregulation, not just bankers, have a lot to answer for.

“They liberalized, they deregulated, even as the banking sector was going crazy… in the US, this is bipartisan. The Clinton administration gave the bankers a lot of what they wanted, the Bush administration even more.”

Krugman told the mostly-Vietnamese audience to not let the same thing happen here. “If you let a deregulated financial system run wild, it will do very bad things to your economy.”

Slap in the face

In discussing Vietnam’s situation, Krugman also warned against some of the market’s more exotic trappings.

Asked about whether Vietnam should embrace derivatives, he was clear: “Don’t touch them.”

He was skeptical of financial innovation in general. Most innovations – other than ATMs and overdraft protection – were geared toward helping institutions evade regulation, he said.

Turning back to his rules for the financial sector, he suggested that banks be restricted from operating out of their main line of business.

He said any deregulation “needs to be done with great care because you’ll find that when banking system goes wrong it does a lot of damage.”

Now that damage has been done, he said the fate of highly trade-dependent, small economies like Vietnam were tightly bound to the world crisis, with their recovery linked directly to a real global recovery.

So, what can Vietnam do toward that recovery?

“Not a lot under the circumstances,” said Krugman. “Pray that the bigger economies get their act together.”

He said things would have to change in New York and London before they changed in Vietnam.

Though Vietnam was not responsible for the crisis, Krugman said the country was being “slapped in the face by the invisible hand.”

Wryly, he said: “I miss that US$3 trillion that we spent on tax cuts and the war,” positing that if the US hadn’t wasted the funds, the crisis would be less severe.

Many reliable international economic magazines are saying the crisis has not hit bottom and nobody knows how large it is… for developing countries like Vietnam, the crisis arrived later but will stay longer.

I personally think official predictions that Vietnam’s economy will recover by the end of this year are unrealistic. The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs said 300,000-400,000 people have lost their jobs, while trade associations have reported nearly 5,000,000. As the unemployment rate is a critical criterion in assessing the crisis, transparent information is more essential than ever.

Krugman’s careful judgments can help governments and policy makers be more objective. They should keep their eyes on the rough road ahead.

Vietnam’s US$8 billion stimulus package accounts for about 10 percent of its GDP. However, several representatives at the current National Assembly session are questioning where this money came from and how it will be used. Here, we [need] a clear target and transparent supervision system for stimulus packages.

If people’s creativity is allowed to flourish, it would usually create better results. Vietnam has allowed room for the private sector to develop and this should be maintained in the future. However, this is not a case for some to take undue advantage and commit corruption.

Interest returns as Vietnamese stocks become cheap

The market has been benefiting from increased liquidity in the last couple of weeks as a result of returning interest in Vietnamese shares.

The drop we saw in 2008 and the early part of the year has made Vietnamese shares cheaper, which has helped fuel the return of interest in the market.

Some Vietnamese companies have also been more proactive in disclosing information and increasing transparency, allowing investors to increase their understanding and conviction in some of the companies that they have invested in.

It is no secret that the market has moved higher in terms of valuations given the recent runup. Our view is that the sustainability of the market’s rally should be determined by the fundamentals of the stocks themselves.

Should we see more companies upgrading or becoming more bullish on their respective earnings outlook going forward, then that should indicate that the market’s renewed strength should be sustainable.

Vietnam central bank has no plans to devalue dong

There is no plan to devalue the dong or change the benchmark interest rate, the central bank governor said.

Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. predicted recently that Vietnam would devalue its currency by 4 percent within three months to boost exports and narrow a gap between so-called official and free-market rates. The dong traded between banks at VND17,783 against the dollar, 1.8 percent weaker than at the end of last year.

The State Bank of Vietnam controls the currency by setting a daily reference rate, and allows the dong to trade 5 percent either side of that rate.

“We don’t have any plans to devalue the dong in the way we did in December,” Governor Nguyen Van Giau said in an interview on the sidelines of the opening of the National Assembly Wednesday in Hanoi.

On December 25 it set the reference rate 3 percent weaker.

The gap between the official and black-market rates widened by about 2 percent in April, according to Indochina Capital Vietnam Holdings Ltd.

Importers have been buying dollars on the “parallel market” because banks do not have enough, the ANZ report said.

Measures the central bank has taken to make dollars more easily available to importers would eventually narrow the gap between official exchange rates and the free-market rate, Giau said.

In the past year the dong has been devalued twice and the government has significantly widened its trading band, allowing the currency to slip some 9 percent against the greenback.

Many expect the slide to continue this year.

However, the Asian Development Bank (ADB)‘s country director said on Monday Vietnam does not need to devalue its currency in the short or medium term because the weakness of the dong is more about perception than supply and demand.

The government should also avoid further loosening monetary policy because that would risk upsetting macroeconomic stability in a country that is structurally prone to inflation, which the ADB’s Ayumi Konishi said had the potential to re-emerge.

The ADB’s position on the currency jibes with that of the State Bank of Vietnam, the central bank, which said last week it saw no need for a major devaluation although it expected the dong to depreciate by up to 6 percent this year.

“When we look at foreign exchange demand and supply situation, particularly for trade related demands, there is no reason that the Vietnamese dong needs to devalue further at this particular point in time,” Konishi told Reuters in an interview.

“At least in the short and medium term we do believe that the Vietnamese dong exchange rate should be maintained pretty much at the same level, of course, with the flexibility given to reflect the demand and supply situation.

“The currency trading outside of the band ... reflects more a perception issue rather than the real demand and supply situation of the currency to start with,” Konishi said.

TIME LINE OF VIETNAM’S CURRENCY POLICY

March 24, 2009 - Central bank widens trading band to +/-5 percent from +/-3 percent. The mid-point reference rate stays steady, but in trade the dong quickly weakens to the new band’s limit. On the unofficial market it soon moves beyond the weak end of the band.

December 31, 2008 - The dong ends the year down 8.2 percent against the dollar on interbank markets. Based on the official mid-point reference rate, the dong ends the year down 5.2 percent.

December 25, 2008 - Central bank devalues the dong by 3 percent by adjusting the mid-point reference rate to VND16,989 per dollar from VND16,494 per dollar.

November 7, 2008 - Central bank widens the band to +/-3 percent from +/-2 percent in a move widely seen as designed to allow the currency to depreciate so that exports can help the country’s growth. The dong weakens to the new band’s limit.

June 26, 2008 - The central bank doubles the trading band to +/-2 percent from +/-1 percent, yielding to market pressure for the currency to fall at a time of sustained double-digit inflation and wide trade deficits. The bank also bans the trading of US dollars and dong via a third currency.

June 11, 2008 - The central bank devalues the dong by 2 percent by setting the mid-point reference rate at VND16,461 to a dollar in the face of double-digit inflation and a worsening balance of payments.

March 10, 2008 - Central bank widens the band to +/-1 percent from +/- 0.75 percent.

Con số gây ngạc nhiên lớn về chỉ số ZEW của Đức, chỉ số đo lường niềm tin của các chuyên gia kinh tế cũng như của giới đầu tư về viễn cảnh kinh tế, đã tiếp thêm “năng lượng” cho đồng EUR. Nhờ sự hồi phục ở các ngành xuất khẩu đã lấy lại thăng bằng và sự hồi phục ở khu vực dịch vụ và sản xuất trong báo cáo PMI, các nhà phân tích đã dự báo chỉ số ZEW sẽ tăng lên từ 13 tới 20 điểm, tuy nhiên, nó đã vượt xa mọi dự báo, vọt lên tới 31,1 điểm, mức cao kỷ lục trong 3 năm liên tiếp.

Các nhà đầu tư tuy vẫn mang những tư tưởng bi quan, yếm thế về tình trạng hiện tại của nền kinh tế Đức nhưng về tổng quan, các dự báo triển vọng tương lai đã lạc quan hơn nhiều. Nói cách khác, các nhà đầu tư tin rằng, ở khu vực đồng EUR, những điều kinh khủng nhất đã qua.

Thị trường vàng giảm nhiệt

Giá giảm nhẹ, về sát mốc 20 triệu đồng, là tin vui với những ai kịp bán ra chiều qua, song khiến một vài nhà đầu tư chạnh lòng vì trót ôm vào với kỳ vọng lướt sóng ngắn.

Sáng nay, giá vàng miếng Rồng Vàng Thăng Long của Bảo Tín Minh Châu mở cửa 14/5 ở 19,99- 20,05 triệu đồng mỗi lượng. So với sáng qua, giá mua vào giảm 20.000 và giá bán ra giảm 10.000 đồng.

Công ty vàng bạc đá quý Phú Nhuận niêm yết giá mua vào giảm 20.000 đồng xuống còn 20 triệu đồng mỗi lượng. Trong khi đó, giá bán ra tăng 20.000 đồng, lên mức 20,06 triệu đồng một lượng. Riêng vàng miếng SJC của Công ty vàng bạc đá quý Sài Gòn đang giữ giá mua vào 20 triệu đồng từ chiều qua. Trong khi đó, giá bán ra giảm 10.000 đồng, xuống còn 20,06 triệu đồng mỗi lượng.

Hôm qua, vàng miếng trong nước vượt mốc 20 triệu đồng sau nhiều ngày chờ đợi. Đây là mức giá lý tưởng cho các nhà đầu tư bán ra kiếm lời. Tuy mức giá doanh nghiệp thu mua đợt này cao hơn hồi sốt tháng 3 và giữa tháng 2, nhưng lượng vàng người dân đi bán lần này không nhiều bằng. Bà Nguyễn Thị Cúc, Phó tổng giám đốc Công ty vàng bạc đá quý Phú Nhuận cho biết lượng vàng PNJ thu mua được ngày hôm qua trên toàn quốc đạt 3.645 lượng. Con số này không thấm tháp gì so với 10.200 lượng hôm 21/3, khi giá mua vào đạt 20,03 triệu đồng.

Tuy vậy, đợt sốt đem vàng đi bán lần này là diễn biến mới của thị trường sau nhiều tuần giao dịch ảm đạm. Lượng vàng người dân đi bán tăng 25% so với tuần trước.

Điểm đáng lưu ý là nhiều người vẫn tiếp tục mua vào khi giá tăng cao. Ngày hôm qua, bên cạnh một số lượng lớn người bán vàng, có nhiều nhà đầu tư lại đi mua hoặc mua ngay sau khi vừa bán xong. Một phần vì các tiệm vàng trong nước tăng giá khá dè dặt so với đà tăng của thế giới, khuyến khích nhiều người mua lướt sóng với hy vọng sẽ bán ra khi giá tiếp tục đi lên. Suy tính này cũng là lý do nhiều người chưa vội bán vàng trong hôm qua.

Thị trường thế giới đang ổn định quanh 925 USD, và có lúc vượt lên trên 930 USD vào đêm qua. Trong phiên giao dịch sáng nay, thị trường dao động giằng co giữa 925-927 USD và hiện chốt ở 925,50 USD một ounce lúc 9h40 theo giờ Hà Nội.

So với đầu tuần, mỗi lượng vàng thế giới tăng hơn 323.000 đồng (đã bao gồm thuế nhập khẩu. Trong khi đó, giá vàng miếng trong nước chỉ tăng 120.000-150.000 đồng mỗi lượng trong đợt tăng giá hôm qua, thu hẹp khoảng cách với giá thế giới.

Sau nhiều ngày liên tục đón những tin tức kinh tế lạc quan, ngày hôm qua, số liệu cho thấy doanh số bán lẻ tại Mỹ đang giảm mạnh. Báo cáo này nhắc nhở các nhà đầu tư rằng người tiêu dùng vẫn đang mắc kẹt với vấn đề tiền bạc, mặc dù niềm tin của họ đã tăng lên. Giới đầu tư lo ngại quá trình phục hồi kinh tế có thể diễn ra chậm hơn so với những dự báo đáng mừng gần đây.

Giới đầu tư vẫn trung thành với thị trường vàng kể cả nếu kinh tế dần đi lên vào cuối năm nay. Lúc đó, nguy cơ lạm phát xảy ra sẽ tiếp tục hỗ trợ thị trường vàng. Các nhà đầu tư xem vàng là nơi cất giữ của cải lý tưởng khi đồng tiền mất giá.

Ngoài ra, giá vàng trong hôm nay sẽ được hỗ trợ bởi động thái mua vào của quỹ giao dịch hoán đổi vàng lớn nhất thế giới SPDR. Hôm qua, quỹ này đã mua vào 1,53 tấn, tăng lượng nắm giữ lên 1.105,62 tấn vàng. Đây là đợt mua mới nhất của quỹ sau nhiều tuần liên tục bán ra.

Bán lẻ là ngành kinh doanh hấp dẫn nhất VN

70% số nhà đầu tư được Grand Thornton khảo sát đã cho rằng kinh doanh bán lẻ là ngành hấp dẫn nhất để đầu tư tại VN trong năm nay.

Con số này rút ra từ cuộc khảo sát "Lĩnh vực tư nhân - khảo sát về môi trường đầu tư tại VN" do Grand Thornton công bố hôm qua. Khảo sát bắt đầu tiến hành từ tháng 3.

Xếp hạng sức hấp dẫn của những ngành kinh doanh được lựa chọn ở VN trong lĩnh vực đầu tư cá nhân, 70% số người tham gia cho rằng kinh doanh bán lẻ là ngành hàng hấp dẫn hiện nay. Các ngành chăm sóc sức khỏe, công nghệ sinh học và kinh doanh bán lẻ đều đáng để đầu tư.

"Việc chuyển đổi theo hướng thương mại hiện đại của VN, các chính sách khuyến khích cơ hội đầu tư mới cũng như sự thiếu hụt hiện tại về chất lượng không gian bán lẻ ở trung tâm TP HCM, đã góp phần làm cho khu vực đầu tư kinh doanh bán lẻ trở nên tiềm năng hơn", Giám đốc bộ phận Tư vấn tài chính doanh nghiệp của Grand Thornton Matthew Lourey nhận định.

Cũng theo kết quả khảo sát, có 23% nhà đầu tư muốn rót vốn vào ngành khách sạn, du lịch và 26% chọn lĩnh vực sản xuất.

Cuộc khảo sát được thực hiện với 169 đơn vị đầu tư tư nhân trong và ngoài nước.

HSBC: Nhà đầu tư chứng khoán Việt Nam đã “kỹ tính” hơn

Trong báo cáo về tình hình kinh tế Việt Nam ra ngày 6/5, Ngân hàng Hồng Kông - Thượng Hải (HSBC) cho rằng, thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam đã có một số chuyển biến tích cực.

Tuy nhiên, ngân hàng này vẫn giữ quan điểm thận trọng về sự phục hồi xa hơn của thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam trong thời gian tới.

Báo cáo cho rằng, từ đầu năm tới nay, thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam đã chứng kiến mức độ lên xuống mạnh của giá cổ phiếu, tương tự những gì diễn ra trên thị trường toàn cầu. Trong thời gian từ 24/2 đến 14/4, VN-Index đã tăng 47%, trước khi giảm trở lại khoảng 8% trong thời gian còn lại của tháng 4. Từ đầu năm tới nay, chỉ số này hiện đã tăng 1%.

Tuy nhiên, từ đầu năm tới nay, chỉ số VN-Index nếu tính theo USD đã tăng kém hơn chỉ số MSCI của thị trường chứng khoán châu Á-Thái Bình Dương trừ Nhật Bản 10,1%.

Những chuyển biến tích cực

Một yếu tố đáng chú ý trên thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam từ đầu năm tới thời điểm này là sự khác biệt tương đối lớn giữa sự lên xuống của giá các cổ phiếu. Dường như, các nhà đầu tư Việt Nam cuối cùng đã lựa chọn kỹ hơn khi mua cổ phiếu, thay vì mua theo cảm tính như trước đây.

Các chuyên gia của HSBC nhận định, một vài yếu tố khác cũng đã có chuyển biến tích cực. Khối lượng giao dịch bình quân trên thị trường trong đợt phục hồi gần đây đã tăng lên. Trong đó, riêng trong tháng 4, khối lượng trung bình ngày của cả hai sàn cộng lại đạt 69 triệu USD, cao nhất từ tháng 9 năm ngoái.

Ngoài ra, nhờ giá cổ phiếu tăng, nhóm cổ phiếu có giá trị vốn hóa thị trường đủ lớn để các nhà đầu tư ngoại rót vốn cũng tăng lên. Hiện đang có 8 cổ phiếu có giá trị vốn hóa từ 500 triệu USD trở lên, so với 4 cổ phiếu ở thời điểm cuối tháng 2.

Tuy nhiên, báo cáo của HSBC cũng cho thấy, các nhà đầu tư ngoại không phải là đối tượng chèo lái đợt phục hồi này của thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam. Lượng mua vào của khối ngoại đã co lại tới mức gần như không có gì.

Từ đầu năm tới nay, lượng mua ròng cổ phiếu Việt Nam của khối ngoại chỉ là 3 triệu USD. Sau một thời gian bán ròng trong quý 4/2008, hoạt động của các nhà đầu tư nước ngoài trên thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam về cơ bản gần như là trung tính, với các hoạt động bên phía mua và phía bán cùng ít.

Theo số liệu của HSBC, hiện khối ngoại vẫn chiếm khoảng 1/5 khối lượng giao dịch trên thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam, nhưng có vẻ như lượng vốn nước ngoài mới chảy vào thị trường này là rất hạn chế. Trong đó, các hoạt động của khối ngoại tập trung vào việc tái cân bằng danh mục đầu tư của các quỹ quốc gia đóng.

Các chuyên gia thực hiện báo cáo nhận định, một lý do dẫn tới tình trạng này là do tính thanh khoản của đồng VND đã giảm sút và hoạt động chuyển đổi tiền bán cổ phiếu từ VND sang USD gặp khó khăn.

Ngược lại, thời gian qua xuất hiện nhiều thông tin cho thấy các nhà đầu tư nhỏ lẻ của Việt Nam, trong đó có cả những bà nội trợ, lại trở nên hứng thú với cổ phiếu. Có vẻ như cơn sốt vàng của năm ngoái đã hạ nhiệt, cùng với việc Việt Nam đã xuất đi một lượng vàng đáng kể trong thời gian qua.

Vẫn thận trọng

Về giá trị của các cổ phiếu, HSBC cho rằng, khó mà có thể xác định rõ giá trị của các cổ phiếu trên thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam ở thời điểm này. Hệ số giá/thu nhập (P/E) trên sàn Tp.HCM dựa trên mức lợi nhuận của năm 2008 hiện là 12,9 lần. Nhưng con số này không cho thấy được gì nhiều nếu như không đoán định được “đường đi nước bước” của lợi nhuận các doanh nghiệp niêm yết trong năm nay.

Năm 2008, thu nhập tính trên mỗi cổ phiếu (EPS) của các cổ phiếu niêm yết đã giảm 34% do các doanh nghiệp vào sổ những khoản thua lỗ phát sinh từ đầu tư vào thị trường địa ốc và chứng khoán. HSBC tạm thời coi lợi nhuận của các doanh nghiệp sẽ đi ngang trong năm nay. Mặc dù vậy, lợi nhuận quý 1 của một số ít doanh nghiệp đã công bố tính tới thời điểm này cho thấy, tình hình lợi nhuận có thể tệ hơn thế.

Hiện mới chỉ có 7 doanh nghiệp niêm yết lớn công bố lợi nhuận quý đầu năm, trong đó lợi nhuận sau thuế của tất cả các doanh nghiệp này đều giảm mạnh so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái.

Trong nửa sau của năm, việc so sánh tình hình lợi nhuận năm nay với năm ngoái sẽ dễ dàng hơn. Các doanh nghiệp tới thời điểm này nhìn chung đều đưa ra dự báo khá khả quan. Do đó, HSBC tiếp tục duy trì quan điểm cho rằng, lợi nhuận của các doanh nghiệp niêm yết trên thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam năm nay sẽ đi ngang.

Do sự thiếu minh bạch trong vấn đề công bố lợi nhuận cũng như xác định giá trị của các cổ phiếu, ở thời điểm hiện tại, HSBC tiếp tục thận trọng về triển vọng thị trường chứng khoán Việt Nam. Các chuyên gia của ngân hàng này cho rằng, thị trường Việt Nam vẫn là một thị trường nhiều biến động và có độ minh bạch thấp.

Báo cáo nhận định, trên thị trường Việt Nam vẫn đang có những cổ phiếu có giá trị hợp lý và triển vọng tốt trong dài hạn. Tuy nhiên, các chuyên gia thực hiện báo cáo cho rằng, trong bối cảnh giá cổ phiếu tại các thị trường chứng khoán châu Á đang nổi lên đang rẻ và sự thận trọng trước rủi ro của các nhà đầu tư toàn cầu còn ở mức cao, họ nhận thấy sức hấp dẫn lớn hơn và mức độ rủi ro thấp hơn ở những thị trường khác trong khu vực.
